Erica's Run .com

This past weekend was Erica's Run in honor of my beautiful niece, who passed away in 2009. My sister has an amazing team of women that has helped to organize this event, now in its third year - her son and two daughters are now on the board, too.

My niece, Jackie, wrote a beautiful poem about her sister .....

  Our Angel Erica
Daughter, Sister, Friend

Erica Nicole, a baby girl born with a head full of hair
and a set of big brown eyes that loved to stare.
As she grew into a young little girl,
she loved to play dress up with Nana's rhinestones and pearls.
She was a tomboy in dresses
who made plenty of messes.
Having to sit in the bathtub just to eat her food,
she created a monstrosity as she chewed and chewed.
A daughter who gave her mother a run for her money,
who woulda thought, she'd grow up to be so funny.
She went from bullying her two sisters and brother,
to a young woman who protected and loved them just like her mother.
She was a loyal and true friend,
all the way from beginning to end.
She puts the sun in our sunshine,
because our hearts will forever intertwine.
With a smile that would light up a room,
and an enticing scent of sweet perfume.
Beautiful, intelligent and talented too,
are qualities of Erica's just to name a few.
Strong courageous and brave also come to mind,
- J.M. Pombrio

I'm so glad we were able to take the trip to Merrimack, NH - the wonderful team of volunteers helped to make the 3rd Annual Erica's Run grow from 207 runners last year to 436 runners this year!! The money raised goes to assist families in the community that are in the midst of battling cancer, to help pay their bills. When my sister and her family were in the battle for Erica's life, the community of Merrimack came to embrace them and become a part of their family, so it's such a wonderful gift to be able to give back!! I love to go there and become a part of the community, if only for a short time.

My Sister's Wedding

Last Saturday, July 28, my sister married her soul mate, her best friend, her perfect match. She was so happy and looked absolutely gorgeous - they both looked like kids again!!

I was lucky to be one of her bridesmaids, along with her two beautiful daughters and our sister. This marriage was a long time in the making - fifteen years to be exact - what a beautiful day it was!!

When she first got engaged, I made her a necklace using pearls and a rectangle piece from our Grandmother's jewelry box, plus Czech glass, Swarovski crystals and Delicas.

She decided on a different dress than originally planned, and thought something a little more delicate would work better.

I found a broken necklace that our Mom had asked me to fix (but never got around to sending to me) in her dresser, and knew that it would go perfectly! I used our Grandmother's pearls and kept the Swarovski as a bit more sparkle.

I wanted the necklace to have meaning to her - the big stone in the center represents her beautiful daughter that she lost in 2009 and the two smaller stones represent our parents.

I also made the bridesmaid jewelry. When my sister decided on the dress - the colors of the sunset - I couldn't picture it or find it on the Macy's website to get a good look at what I'd be working with. When I saw her in April, she gave me the dress and I got to work! Lucky for me, I receive the Fusion Beads emails and saw this bracelet and knew, with a few minor adjustments, it would be perfect!

These are the bridesmaid dresses - the sunset was our Mom's favorite time of day.

The bracelet and earrings go perfectly with the dress! The picture doesn't do the stones for the earrings justice - they are a beautiful thunder polished fucschia.

Amazing sunset at Curtis Farm in Wilton, NH

So Proud of My Son.......

Tonight, my 14 year old, Alex, graduated from the Westerville Youth Police Academy (did I say I'm proud of him!!). He was in Class 5 of this wonderful program, that teaches the cadets all areas of police work. It has been a week long program that he thoroughly enjoyed, since he's known that he wants to be a police officer since he was 3! Next, he'll go on to the Explorer's program which goes more in-depth into police work.

There was an article in today's The Columbus Dispatch about the program

My Dad

It seems unbelievable that it's been a year since my Dad passed. I was lucky that I was able to move him to a wonderful home about a mile from my house and  I visited him every day. He wasn't an easy man to get to know, but we shared so many laughs when he was here for four months, that I got to know my Dad all over again! My boys spent a lot of time with him, too - the card games and the laughs will forever be fond memories.

Improv II

"Life's too short to always sit in the audience"

That's my new motto!!

My good friend, Debby and I had so much fun in our first improv class that we took the Advanced Improv class at the Funny Bone here in Columbus, OH. We had the same great teacher, Jeff Gage, and three guys from our first class continued on, as well. Also in the class were two OSU grads, a lawyer, an actor, and a student - an interesting mix of people.

At our Improv Graduation on May 14, we put on a show in front of an audience of family and friends that was full of laughs and high-fives! I feel so lucky to have met so many amazing, wonderful and oh so talented people!!

Improv

I recently took an eight week Intro to Improv class at our local Funny Bone here in Columbus, OH. A good friend, Debby, and I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into - we ended up having so much fun that we signed up for the Advanced Improv class!!
Our group included a couple of actresses, actors, a stand-up and Moms (that would be us) - our phenomenal teacher, Jeff, has also done stand-up. I took the class because I wanted step outside my "comfort-zone" - I have always been a nervous, sweaty wreck in front of people.
March 5 was our Improv Graduation - that night was the most fun, with family and friends in the audience to cheer us on!! As one of my Improv-mates said - "now we can say we have been on stage at the Funnny Bone"!!

My Momma & Her Girls

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

"Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy."

God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy."

Again the child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?"

God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak."

"And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"

God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."

"Who will protect me?"

God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking it's life."

"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."

"You will simply call her, 'Mom.'"

My Christmas Present

I only want one present from my boys - yes, it can be torturous (their perspective), but it's not expensive. The one and only present I ask for (every year) is a picture with Santa. We kept putting off the inevitable, and went this morning to get the picture taken. I was surprised that, at 10am, the mall was not crowded at all! We did have to wait for about an hour for our turn with the Big Guy, but the picture turned out GREAT!

Love Santas face in this one - not sure what he was thinking, but I should have asked!

In the fall, I love going for long walks at the local park and taking pictures of my boys. But, my favorite part of these walks is all the talking we do - and all the laughing!!

Recap of the Week

It's been one of our busier weeks this summer.................

                                                           Magic Mountain

                                                               Sky Zone

                                                        the Ohio State Fair

Deep-fried Snickers - we also tried deep-fried Twinkies and Three Musketeers with a little heartburn on the side. Maybe that's why the boys didn't want to go on any rides??!

                               I'm thinking Christmas card................................ :)
